We are an electrical contractors who became MCS in July. As I was getting married and took a honeymoon, we didnt really get started with solar until the autumn and have consequently only delivered 2 systems. The last one got handed over at the beginning of December and because of the government intervention, I've pretty much wound down my efforts. Our target market for the first year, was only ever going to be individual homeowners and small businesses as we are only 5 strong and are pretty busy in our core businesses.

As far as I see it right now, only the very enviornmentally conscious homeowners will choose PV and even then, their homes are unlikely to meet energy perfromance targets to make it worth while. So PV is mostly only viable for new build developments and perhaps those managed by local authorities. the competition will be fierce and the big boys who are solely PV installers will be an automatic choice.

So, should I just wait it out until the spring and see how the legislation develops or do you guys think its worth throwing money at advertising and marketing? We would only ever be local (home counties). I realise we are lucky in that its not our livelihood and I have a lot of sympathy for all the guys that depend on PV- fingers crossed we receive some positive news in the coming months.

nearly all our business comes from our website. I shall probably do a local leaflet drop in feb but not intending to lash out loads.

think a lot of people use the MCS database to find an installer locally, then go to their website to check them out. Others are google search and the like. We have no salesmen, it's one of our USPs!

I thought that, but then I've seen a few installs pop up locally and I certainly wasnt called to quote. I am the only installer in my town and definately have the best website in the wider area (if i do say so!). i think the leaflet drops hold decent weight for solar.

we did leaflet drop when we first started! 500 leaflets 2 replies i potential client (never got it) 1 visit from trading standards :) someone complained i must be a COWBOY because the return figures/cost of install were too good to b true! HE ACTUALY SAT IN MY OFFICE AND TOLD ME even though i was niceic real mcs i needed to be aware of pressure selling!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol i hadnt sold one at that time!!!!!! only way to sell solar pv is complete one install (at 43.3p) the neighbours came running!! not one at 21p but im not fussed as im still in RECOVERY from november/december ! stic to norm electrics and as an extra suggest it would be in there intrest (even at 21p) to have it fitted! otherwise it will be so cut throat it wont be worth it as lot of SOLAR only companies need work!!!

Thats exactly my thoughts. Ironically, I have 500 leaflets sitting in my office collecting dust and i was about to get them distributed. I'll be nervously answering the phone!

Contemplating the same issue, trouble is as a sideline its expensive:
REAL - ÂŁ220 - still not paid mine yet as I'm in 2 minds.
Gemserve - ÂŁ110
MCS Accreditation - ÂŁ400(?)
Calibration of additional tools - irradiance meter, clampmeter.

i think its a dead duck! ive been getting offers from suppliers cheaper and cheaper but only job ive got has to be centro solar but they all want to flog me other makes? i think suppliers will be going BUST big time soon! as they dont want to buy in kit just use stock they have ! i should of caneld my REAL!

Centro solar complete kits available not too bad price from PV Kits Direct. Leaflets do not work. Good Workmanship and word of mouth from customers works. Also have a website with customer feedback and images. at the prices currently being offered for kit there is still a return and worth it. but will never take over our core busness, Sparks through and through.
