Hi All,

I've had a real headache over this problem for the past few weeks as I can not seem to get any accurate advice! I have just found this site and browsed a few of the threads and believe that some of you may finally be able to help me? (Please!)

I am ex RAF and unfortunately I've been disabled for many years. I am on the road to recovery and I've decided that my ultimate goal is to become an Electrician and set up my own business (This isn't a whim, I have thought it through and realise that it's not going to happen easily/overnight)

My idea is that I will obtain the qualifications necessary first. My Conundrum is as follows:

As I said, I am ex RAF. I was an Avionics Mechanic (Tech Stream). My Qualification Details are: Avionics Mechanic Accredited by the City and Guilds of London Institute, Awarded a CG 2249-Electrical Servicing at RAF Cosford in 1998. This is a Certificate of Unit Credit Towards Electronic Servicing Part 1, Joint Certificate with EEB. I was successful in the following three components:

ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS CREDIT
ASSIGNMENTS PASS*
PRACTICAL TEST PASS*

PASS* Indicates no higher grade is possible in this component.

My First question is: What modern qualification is this equal to?

My Second question is: What further qualifications would I need to gain to become a self employed domestic electrician?

I have researched these questions already but would ask that you be as comprehensive in your reply as you can/like as I believe the more information gleaned from your answers the more informed I become lol ( I suppose what I'm trying to say is that I'm not being lazy, I know that I will need C&G 2382-12 etc but I want to be sure that I have covered all the basis). What my qualification is equal to? has me stumped lol!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you kindly, in advance, for your answers/help, Thank you!

I'm sorry biff55 but your replys just reak of someone bitter and didn't answer any of my questions? Why post?

i gave you a perfectly good suggestion in my first post.
sounds like youre one of the many who ignore anything you dont want to hear.
and i post because i give many hours of effort on this forum , rather than just signing on for 5mins then making ill informed comments to someone trying to give genuine advice.

dont like it then do one.

Darren, There is a lot of good advice on here. Doing domestic is not as easy as it sounds. 20% is probably electrical, the rest is moving furniture, carpets, lifting floorboards, chasing walls, digging holes in ceilings, digging trenches across: lawns, paths concrete, a bit of: plumbing, carpet laying, plastering, joinery, plumbing, phones, TV & sat aerials, network cabling and making it all good.

Getting the experience to do all the above competently in someones home as well as not making a mess of the electrics takes time to pick up. With the market as it is at the moment you will find it hard to get a job where you can learn.

I agree with the others that you may be better using the skills you already have and expanding on those rather than changing course.

Good luck.

As far as Im aware mate you dont need 2330 L3 to be a registered domestic spark. unless the Part P requirements have changed recently, you only actually need the 17th edition qual and perhaps a 2391 type testing qual. To get on a 17th ed course you usually need to have either 2330 level 2 or one of the mickey mouse part P type quals.
As far as im aware people of any age can get on 2330 L2 its just the taxpayer wont fund it if yer over 25.

Hi mate,

Qualifications wise you will want 2382 (17th edition), 2394 (test and inspection of new work) and BPEC Part P full scope. Plus 2377 if you want to PAT test and 2395 if you want to do test and inspections of existing installations (periodic inspections, condition reports etc.). I believe I am right that this is what the Part P registration bodies would look for in your circumstances - but please don't take it as Gospel. I'll leave it to others to rant about what you need over and above the pieces of paper. Be aware though, the Part P assessment guidelines (EAS) change in a couple of weeks and you will need to demonstrate two year's experience (e.g. portfolio) to get full-whack assessment in order to go it alone.

Domestic

OK the route in lvl 2 2330 electrical installation (mostly 3 days a week) 1 year or 1 evening a week for 2 years..

Level 3 2330 electrical installation.. same most place 3 days a week or can do the night class.

17th edition 30 hours and 1 gola exam you will need purchase the up to date regs book for this, (ÂŁ60 ish ) you could get this course free when doing 2330 full time if complete early in alot of colleges.

Initial verification inspecting and testing 2392-10 30 hours lessons 1 pract exam 1 gola exam

2394 inspection testing 30 hours 1 prac 1 written exam

2395 inspection testing 30 hours 1 prac 1 written exam

also if you can get someone to sign some work that you do you can do your NVQ and AM1

Sounds like I may stand corrected...however you can in principle go straight in at the level 3 2394/5 quals, yes? I appreciate you will struggle without the right background.

Darren i have a better job offer.

I house bash, you person bash, when they don't pay me. You get 20% and can make as quick or slow job of it as you please.

"Need a spark, look no further - but if you don't cough the cash, your guna get a bash" van signage?

;)

I have 2330 level 2 2330 level 3 17th edition , pat testing

my college made me do the 2392 first said i wasnt able to go straight to 2394 so not sure if that was them being (you know) or actually a rule.

Sounds like I may stand corrected...however you can in principle go straight in at the level 3 2394/5 quals, yes? I appreciate you will struggle without the right background.
