Hi, I'm in the process of going self employed but I'm not sure about what qualifications I would need. Do you need Part p and city and guilds 2391? cheers.

Generally yes you would have to sign up to a scheme in order to sign off work which is considered to be "notifiable" or do it through the LABC, which is expensive. To sign up with the NIC or others you will need to base your choice of qualifications around their requirements, and then any others on top of that too.

Not sure on your age, but apprenticeships are the way forward!

yeah, i'm 23 completed an apprenticeship over a year ago but thought you may need further qualification to work self employed and to give out certificates.

you don’t have to register with niceic their are about 5 governing bodies which allow you to become part p all with different requirements for entry. Niceic, napit and bsi (kitemark) are some of the bodies.
You can go through building control but that would cost more money every time to get work signed off. In long run easier and cheaper to register with one of the governing bodies.

ah ok, what qualifications have you got at the minute? If you have completed a decent electricians apprenticeship I can't see why you wouldn't have the right ones for becoming self employed and being able to register with a scheme!

.recognised apprenticeship
.svq levell III
.sjib recognised 17th edition inspection & testing (bs 7671)20009
.approved health & safety

do these bodies supply certs, do you have to give out certificates for all work carried out, sorry dont want to dive in without knowing the basics.

i know that the bsi you only have to have the 17th edition update as min requirement, they even give a year for gaining it.
you get judged on your competence and knowledge so as long as you can carry out the job to 7671 and know what your on about you should be fine.
