Could anyone please tell me what qualifications are required to become a self employed electrician carring out mainly domestic electrical work.

Technically none.

Yeah. Realistically you need to be registered with ELECSA, NAPIT or NICEIC as a full scope "competent person". That requires at least city and guilds 2382 (17th edition). The exact requirements vary between the three schemes however and the minimum requirement looks set to include an NVQ level 3 as well I believe.

ideally you should have;
2382 (17th edition)
2330 or equivalent underpinning technical certificates

there other ways of gaining certificates but one note to remember is all the quals mean nothing without the experience. i prefer to look at "competence" rather than qualified when assessing some ones abilities to do the job.
if your are just looking for the quals required to join a scheme i think it may just be the 2382 and some sort of competent persons course some of the trainers provide.

Thanks for the reply. I should have stated that i have the city and guilds 236 parts 1 & 2 and have recently updated to the 17th edition and been awarded the level 3 certificate in electrical installation.
With the above qualifications can i carry out my own work.

That should do! Start looking at the three schemes - Elecsa, NAPIT and NICEIC. That's in alphabetical order - I personally would also rank them in that order, but there are advantages to all three.
