After completing my apprenticeship I have worked offshore and in the Merchant Navy. Now I would like to start up a small electrical installation/repair business. Question. What further qualifications do I need to legally trade ? (Part P ? Inspection and testing?) All advice warmly recieved.

you can trade right away. for notifiable jobs, though you will need to either inform LABC before starting and pay their exhorbitant inspection fees or join a scheme like napit, elecsa or nic. and pay their exhorbitant fees.

WSelectrical....if you join Napit you just need to have your 17th, they will send assessor around and check your work, ability to test, if all is fine then you will be granted membership on the condition that you complete a trade test with 6months, giving you a blueflame certification, and also one of the conditions is that you gain the 2391 testing & inspection within 18months. Seems better than 2/3 years of 2330 if you already have experience. Also Part P is a building reg and not a qualificationPart P is a scheme you join so don't let any private training company charger you ÂŁ2000 and tell you your getting a Part P qual as there is no such thing. CheersPhil
