Hi everyone. Just a quick question, my brother is opening a new salon and wants to use copper piping as conduit. whats your thoughts on this[SUP]

thanks

why not use stainless conduit? be difficult to maintain earthing continuity with copper pipe.

so how will you maintain the continuity of the copper through accessories?

There are no such accessory boxes that would facilitate the use of standard copper pipe. What about 20mm steel conduit sleeved with 22mm copper pipe?

If he wants the copper effect, go the proper way and have bare MICC installed.

like that idea. the MICC, i mean.

He wants a product which doesn't exist; he can't just stamp his feet and say that's what he wants. You can't just use plumbing pipe as electrical conduit because as mentioned the accessories aren't compatible.
Your brother could either get his own copper electrical conduit made bespoke at great expense, get black enamel conduit installed and paint it copper coloured, use bare MICC, or compromise and get off the shelf products installed like everyone else does.

I have surface mounted copper conduit in my house. As stated you'd need to maintain earth continuity through the copper but it can be done with a bit of creativity.

How is it any different to maintaining continuity with steel conduit? I've never seen copper conduit so wondering if parts are clamped together (split seam conduit)? I would have thought soldering would have been the ideal continuity option :-)

it can always be done. solder a braid or piece of Gn/Y from pipe to pipe within a back box with a fly lead to the box, but MICC would be a far better option.

In the era of the 11/12/13th edition regs copper, aluminium and steel conduit were recognised in the wiring regulations, so presumably it must have been a standard item in those days.
The copper conduit had soldered 'end feed' fittings and brass besa boxes the same as today's copper pipe fittings.
Copper pipe could easily be used as a conduit for switch and socket drops with brass tank connectors used to join on to the metalclad boxes.
Personally I'd go with the micc suggestion if they want copper.
Or spray paint normal steel conduit!

My era started with the 14th edition in 72, but have never come across it yet.
With some of the past postings, I hope no-one gets the idea of wiring singles through active plumbing pipes :-)

You missed out on the Beatles kit with plastic hair do, guitar and other bits and pieces in the 60's then.

Now do you remember a character called "spunky and his spider" wouldn't get away with that nowadays lol.

beano, dandy and of course the eagle. dan dare and the mekons. classic.
I missed out on those as a kid, my parents used to buy me a magazine called 'World of Knowledge'. I only caught up with the Beano and Mad when I was a student.

The copper conduit in my house was recycled plumbing pipe. I didn't use it as the main circuit cpc, it's just bonded to earth at every point using a very small ring terminal and an M3 countersunk machine screw.

Using this method would also cool the cables and allow a smaller CSA to be used. Obviously you would need to use the cold water pipes, not hot. Obviously. Daz

big copper pipes with earth tags where you can touch it .. with a PVC conduit in the middle with all the wires going in
But that will lower the Current Capacity of the cable

or just spraying a gold ish Leaf/copper spray paint over conduit to make it look a bit copper like but i think that would be dear

bounding to the PVC Conduit is the tricky part tho, but maybe some earth clamps to make it look real.

Im guessing whats the saloon more a industreal look to it with copper (tho copper dose look ugly after a while)

I used to love running and terminating MICC, never used it bare though, but now I bet not many would know how to terminate it properly, let alone own the necessary tools.:wink5:

I installed a bit of 2l2.5 yesterday as it happens, and was reterminating some 7l1.5 a few weeks ago. Lovely stuff to work with.

Sadly never got the chance to work it it on site yet. Made off lots of termination's at college while training and do own the tools to work with the smaller stuff. If i ever end up using them though i am not sure. Hopefully one day.
