Q. Can anybody use a standard BS60898 MCB as the functional switch for that circuit?

^^ easy one for you
This is a bit harder.....

Q. Can an unswitched fused connection unit be used for functional switching? Can it be used for safe isolation, please give a reason for your answers for both.

Have fun

I've received a few good answers so far. Where is yours? The Mentors can have a go as well, be careful though, some of these guys are really good! And everyone has received a PM reply.

I've added a notice for all trainees linking to this thread. Remind me to remove (or change it) on Thursday Paul. :)

No answers tonight I'm afraid. I've just had the day from hell.....

I wont bore you with details but it has been a long day with customers and then my van broke down in the 2nd lane of an A road in rush hour. Waited almost 2 hours for the RAC to turn up, then had to get ÂŁ4k of tools and materials home. Paul M is not a happy chappy and should not be posting up on the forum. Hope you understand?

I will have a more concentrated head on my shoulders tomorrow. I'm not going to post anything else tonight.

I will say this..... All of you that answered via PM were correct.

ANSWER:- Table 53.2 gives "Guidance" on the selection of protective, isolation and switching devices.

It is worthwhile reading regs 537.2.2 and 537.1.2. In fact it would be a good idea to read the full section.

All PM-ed answers are correct so well done everyone. Nice little quick question with a lot of importance for our safety in the work place.

Only question I'm concerned with today is "how much my van is going to cost to fix?" Garage calling me later today, not looking forward to that phone call. Going to work this morning in a taxi! Thank god it's first fix alarm today so dont have to carry many tools. oh well as they say, the show must go on lol.

Paul

Good luck with the van also

Thanks Simon, hope your leg is not giving you too much pain?

As for the garage..... well...... todays phone call went like this:-

"We think its the fuel rail but call us tomorrow at noon when more checks/tests have been carried out."

"Fine,,,, how much is a fuel rail for my van?"

"Not cheap,,,, we are looking at a couple of hundred if not a bit more!!!!"

Ok, I had a look on google and it took me less than 3 1/2 minutes to find 6 retailers for the part I need starting from ÂŁ29.99 - ÂŁ159.99!!!! Dont wish me happy birthday, I was not born yesterday. I cant wait to look this guy in the eye whilst showing him my phone with all the prices of the parts he needs. ÂŁ200- ÂŁ300 I dont think so. This will be a very interesting conversation at noon tomorrow. I feel like John Wayne lol. Well I'm locked and loaded, time to have a word face to face. No-one rips me off.

PS, another question being posted tomorrow. Not doing it now, I'm getting ready to go out lol.

Would it not be a good idea to post your 3 answers to this threads 2 questions, along with any discussions/reasoning behind the answers, before you start posting another question??

HappySteve gets an extra point for his reply. He made a point of locking off the FCU to ensure no one could replace the fuse in the carrier whilst we are working on that circuit. It says in the regs above to ensure that the device is designed to be locked off. Most FCU's can be locked off with a small padlock so carry one in your tool box.
