Why are we so addicted to quiz shows?

Occasionally I get a correct answer on University Challenge...actually, i got 2 tonight!...but Only Connect is a total mystery to me!
Different brains working in different ways, I suppose.
Odd that the average age on University Challenge is about 20, yet they know so much...I just wonder what they would be like if they were put on Only Connect.
I just feel sad that I know so little...I went to Uni, but could only calculate how many beers i could buy with the cash in my pocket.
Pointless, on the other hand...easy-peasy for the most part, but as you progress it's all about Soaps on TV and football, so I am at a loss.
