some of the longer term members remember Tony. Very knowledgeable, controversial, but a true gentleman. I have just heard that he passed away a couple of weeks ago, following a long period of health problems. sadly missed.

Tony Smith was a proper industrial electrician, using the term in its fullest sense as a practitioner of electricity. His experience and knowledge were both broad and deep, his outlook was distinctly pragmatic and he was a decent bloke to boot. RIP Tony.

Bugger, RIP Tony. His extensive library of motors etc was a real help.

As the longer members will know, Tony and I simultaneously locked horns and held hands whilst we modded and admin'd over on another forum for a long time, often chatting on the phone late into the night not only about technical stuff but members, politics of the day and other joint interests we had. He was as irrascible as he was generous and stubborn as a mule, but boy was his head full of stuff.

I remember his signature on here: "We take our knowledge to the grave, until then give it freely". And that, he did.

RIP matey, was an honour.

Oh no, I kept threatening to call him over the last few months but alas I didn't get round to it.
We have spent many hours on the phone away from here talking about anything and everything.
I even had the pleasure of taking him to one of my customers to show him a 1940 Ellison switch panel, he was like a child in a sweet shop, he then spent the next 24 sending me all the information available about it.
Some people occasionally got the sharp side of him but away from the forum he was a gentleman that would give and share anything he had.
Rip you Grumpy Git. TONY..

I completely missed this thread.
Sad news indeed.

Like others I spent hours on the phone talking all sorts of rubbish with him :D
I lost touch with him a few years ago when a change in lifestyle meant no more being up late putting the world to rights.

I went out to meet him before we lost touch and I'm glad I did.

RIP Tony.
