I am trying to get on a course for testing and want to learn as much as I can before I go on the course. I need to know the method used to attain r1+r2.
May seem a bit odd but after not being on the tools for 15 years, just need a bit of guidance.

R1 / R2 is the resistance for your line conductor and protectice conductor.
So, making sure all is safe and I find it easier to take the line conductor out of the breaker and put it into the earth bar, then zeron down your meter on continuity and test at the furthest point of the circuit.
That reading should also added to the Ze or Zs of the consumer unit dependant on whether it is the main board or sub-main board be similar to the Zs at the same point measured, if you can understand that

R1+R2 is different from r1+r2

The first is line conductor and protective conductor in a radial circuit or the mid point on a ring circuit, the second is the line conductor and protective conductor in a ring circuit added together which is he asking about?
