Going to install some decking lights. The fuse board is old school re-wireable fuses - no RCD protection. The owner doesn't want a consumer unit change (yet).

My plan is install an RCD protected fused spur from the kitchen ring main.

The ring itself won't be RCD protected but the spur feeding the garden lights will be - is this acceptable according to 17th edition?

The only other alternative I can see is RCD protected garage unit next to the existing fuse box - putting the old ring main onto that and then spurring off that into the garden - expensive and fiddly though.

Input appreciated.

I can't see a problem with the RCD protected FCU, the deck lighting circuit your installing will be protected!!

Strange how some people think, prepared to pay for deck lights etc, .. but not prepared to pay for the protection of his family and property.... As the Chinese would say in broken English....Stangey!!!

OK, I'll put a question to others on this: does the bonding need to be upgraded (if it isn't already)?

ie. the addition is for external lights outside the equipotential zone, but if you work to the 17th the bonding should be in place?

No to all. Also would require a means of isolation for PIV - pulling a fuse wouldn't be acceptable. I don't mean to seem disrespectful, but this...

The rcd spur being fitted is probably because there wasn't rcd protection of that supply.
