Can someone tell me if an RCD or RCBO, 30ma, will trip on earth leakage if a fault occures from live to the metal case of a switch where no cpc is present ? I think it will as the RCD is looking for an imbalance between line & neutral and this will occure if a person touches the metal switch and provides an earth path.

Any coooment welcome.

Mick

i certainly would not be putting my lily whites on the switch casing to prove if the RCD will trip or not. no cpc = no metal fittings.... end of.

Mick why are you interested in this fella? what are you up too?

The RCD will trip as soon as the fault current reaches 30mA - whether that 30mA is flowing through a cpc, a nail, you or even David COCKburn is irrelevant to it. !!!

Not quite how a RCD or RCBO is intended to work!! It should trip out before someone touches the live metalwork, and if it is for additonal protection, then it should be within 40mS, at 150mA. 415.1.1 refers.

oh come on Tel...

we could rig you up to a little loudspeaker...and everytime you made the faultpath ...and the RCD tripped you could give out a squeel of how many miliseconds it took to operate...

useful if the MFT is away at the cal house...
