Hi all,
I remember when the use of rcd socketsfirst became widespread(before they were generally being incorporated in consumer units) We were told then that there were two types "latching" and "non-latching" . The first type would re energize after a power failure --usefull for a freezer say. The second type non-latching were to be used where unexpected start up might cause an injury and had to be manually reset, for example power tools garden lawnmower/hedgetrimmers.
Have we now lost this safety factor now that rcds are being incorporated as latching type as standard?? My local wholeseler says he's never heard of non-latching rcds.

Think you might have got a bit confused

Non latching RCD'd Trip when power is lost, latching remain closed when power is lost.

Under fault conditions they both behave the same.

Got to be honest mate, never heard of them myself, but found this on the web.
In the latching or Passive units the RCD will remain closed, once set, and will only trip when a hazardous earth fault occurs. If the unit loses supply - perhaps in a power cut - it will stay latched, making it particularly useful in commercial applications, such as controlling refrigeration units.
Non latching or Active units also trip when the power supply is lost, so they are useful for domestic applications - like controlling garden and power tools - where a sudden restoration of power might pose safety problems

Thanks wotsit THATS wot I said I think maybe you are confused
I wasn't talking about under fault condition

Surely if there were issues with the lack of use of non-latching RCD's then the regs may/would have picked up on it by now.

In a domestic environment i dont see any need TBH.

And in a commercial environment there would be non latching starters on any machinery.
