hi there,
just a quick question regarding the addition of an rcd socket.......

i have been asked to fit an additional socket onto an existing ring circuit, however some of the cables in the property are still rubber!!! The owners are unable to afford a complete rewire at the moment but need this extra socket added on the landing area to prevent trailing extension leads across the stairs.

If add an rcd double socket, is it best to use the rcd in place of the socket i will tap into so that the new soket and cable is protected or shall i just use the rcd socket as the new one?

Or even replace the existing socket with the rcd one and plug a flex into it to feed the new double socket?

any advice will help thankyou

Gavin.

If you replace the existing socket with the RCD socket, and then spur a new socket from there, then the new one won't be RCD protected. It would be the same as taking tails out of the incoming side of a main RCD in a CU. If you change the existing one and then plug a multi way adaptor into it, then any appliances plugged into the adaptor would be protected.
