After fitting an rcd socket I see there is a red light that lights up below the test and reset buttons. Should this remain illuminated unless either the rcd trips or the test button is pressed and after using the socket is it a good idea to press the test button or just leave the unit with red light showing.

Basic question but I Only ask as ive never had one if these sockets.

Thanks.

You should always functionally test the test button to ensure the RCD operates. Sounds like red indicator light is to indicate that RCD socket is live and I imagine would turn off when you press button.

I believe that the red light is supposed to stay on when the socket is powered up,the test buttin should be pressed every time it is re-connected with a new piece of equiptment to confirm that the test facility operates correctly,ie use today, unplug, test button press, reset ready to use again.

good advice, better than the wet finger method, lol

1x and 5x have to say...no, but did as I was told installation wise. Spured off socket ran 2.5 to new rcd socket wired as per manufacturers instructions including earth link between E and SE and it all seems to work fine.

Volex are a credible make. Havent installed before though so cant comment definatively on red light issue. Good advice from Rob sparky re testing trip times of the RCD though. Maybe call a sparks in just to check. By rights a minor installation works certificate ought to be completed for the work to confirm mainly the adequacy of the earth fault loop impedance at the socket and the suitablility of the properties earthing and bonding arrangments. You prob find it hard to find a sparky to cert work carried out by yourself though

MK are a good make too, and having tested nearly 25 newly installed MK RCBO's we have found 4 or 5 have failed the function test on 1x and 5x.

So I'd get someone who has a proper meter in to test it for you.

I would add though that a typical good TT rod of 100 ohms only needs 3V to have 30mA flowing and so trip an RCD, you might find that sort of N-E...
