hi, i am trying to find out how to test a RCD if it has a fault. i am using a fluke 1653b unit to test with. can some one help me in how to test the RCD, if it is to sensativ..i have fitted a comsumer unit in a house and the ring mains is tripping the RCD all the time but only when something is switched on in the kitchen ..

Do a ramp test, then an auto test (1xIn.....5xIn etc) but it sounds like a faulty appliance in the kitchen if it only trips when something is switched on. And as above, do the IR test, if you already havent.

Might have a problem testing it with the Fluke if he is using the Plug lead, as the ring keeps tripping it.

Just disconnect from the one side of the RCD and turn it on if it stays on then, select RCD test on the fluke but use the probes.

More than likely its not the RCD its an imbalance somewhere, get the rest of the dead tests done again fist and post the results.

if the RCD is faulty will it trip before the x5 or will it just give a high reading...the house is a mess because they had some fool doing an exstention and cableing up and i had to diconect it all because it faild.. the hole house is on one ring mains (kitchen, all rooms, three beroon house.....thank u for the information so far.

As others have said, disconnect all loads from the RCD, then carry out a ramp test and then the 7 tests described in GN3. Should all them results be fine then its time to test the fixed wiring.

Appliance fault ? not the hard wire pull all plugs and switch off DP switches and try again sounds like you may be slightly out of your depth
