Hi. A friend has asked me to investigate why his RCD trips so often. After checking the sockets that he thinks is tripping it the only prob really was that there was alot of conductor exposed and the earth wasnt sleeved. Also when I was changing a mount box for him the thing was tripping, Obviously the circuit was off, Why? Would it/could it have been the fact that the earth wasnt sleeved and maybe it was shorting?

Thanks in advance.

The rcd also monitors the neutral earth which remain connected even when the mcb is switched off to avoid just drop out the neutral in the dist board when working on circuit.

Agree with DW on this, deffo sounds like an N+E fault.

Are you sure it is the sockets that are causing the problem....be worth you doing an IR test on each circuit individually to clarify exactly.

Cheers guys. Will test individual circuits to check. It hasnt tripped since i sleeved the E. hopefully that was it. Will test to make sure.
