RCD trips when big things are plugged in.

Hello Everyone

I was just enjoying a beer and watching and episode of Sharpe, right before a major battle when everything cut out! The RCD switch on the circuit board tripped. With everything switched off it allows me to turn it back on. Small items such as the WiFi and telephone won't trip it out but the TV does. And to make it worse I can't even make a cup o cha cos that trips the system too! Thank goodness for beer, anyway I'm dangerously close to reading a book, can anyone suggest a solution?

P.S. As you may gather I am not an electrician (sadly) and so I don't have any helpful gadgets to detect faults. I'm only asking on this site in case there is something really simple that I have overlooked, otherwise it'll be a call out first thing in the morning, that much I do know. Cheers again.

No we have not, everything has been working fine till today. In fact yesterday I had many more appliances drawing power than today. Is there such a thing as a faulty RCD switch? Also the fridge trips it out... Beer is getting warm and the massive shop I did yesterday is likely to defrost. It's very annoying!

An appliance fault can cause the tripping
Whilst that faulty appliance is left plugged in ( even if it is switched off at the socket)it can cause other loads like the kettle tv microwave fridge etc to trip the RCD,even when there is nothing wrong with those items

You are best to unplug anything that is not necessary and use things individually until you can identify which appliance is playing up

If it is an installation or Rcd problem,you need a spark

Howdy Folks

I've just tried unplugging everything in the MCB's and all of a sudden the tripping stopped. Narrowed it all down to my Apple Mac being faulty so am off to their website to see what can be done. Thank you for your help in the meantime. Interesting that the appliance was able to trip the RCD without the socket being switched on, we learn something new eh!
