Hi all , a mate has just bought a 3 phase machine. Only has single phase in the garage so has bought a single phase to 3 phase convertor. He's asked me to connect it up which I'm planning on doing via a rotary isolator. My question is, as it needs to be RCd protected, am I right in thinking it needs a type a rcbo because of the surge the machine might produce when started?

Thanks in advance guys

Basically it's for a cobbler with different parts of the machine doing different things. Maximum horse power it will draw is 5. Convertor allows up to 5.5hp so that's fine. How would you determine if a type d needs to be used instead of a type c?

Yes manufacturer suggests it to be RCd protected, plus the cable feeding it will be a swa running from the fuse board in a separate shed and would therefore be running outside at high level. As you may all know , electrical installations outside need to be RCd protected

Manufacturer's suggest what be RCD protected, the single phase to 3 phase converter, or the 3phase machine?
Im not aware there is a requirement to RCD protect outside electrical installations, and from the information you have supplied, it would appear that the installation is in a shed?
