Hi All

I would like to ask if there is a right and wrong way of wiring an RCD / RCCB up. I was under the assumption that the supply was always wired into the top of an rcd / rccb, I thought that the monitoring coil that monitored the voltage was situated in the top of the rcd / rccb and that is why it had to be wired this way.

Can someone advise please as I test a large number of these and have become confused with the situation.

As far as I know there is no universal answer and you would be better off checking the manufacturers instructions for any units you are concerned about.
Most RCDs will have a connection diagram printed on them which will help you out if present.

A normal RCD does not monitor voltage however, it basically compares current flowing through each pole by means of a transformer arrangement.

Thanks for the reply, i have tested a few hundred and sometimkes it seems when they are wired with the supply in the bottom they will not trip on test but if you re wire them with the supply in the bottom they trip ever time on test, i just wanted to know if somewere there was a standard

This thread can now be closed, as I seem to also have space in the box for the first switch. Revised diagram below. Thanks folks.
