Hello all,

I'm new to electrics and a little confused on some of the regs. help would be most welcome!

If i go to a customers house and they have semi enclosed fuses with no rcd protection can i add a socket? or do i have to install a rcd? if so what is the best way of doing this?
also, as regards to old fuses etc.. what is the best way of protecting the ccu? do i have to replace it, or is there a rcd attachment that will convert their existing ccu?

many thanks

paul

Hi Paul dont know of any attachment if you install a socket that circuit has to be to the 17th edition so install an RCD in its own holder outside the CCU.

As for the CCU it dosent comply with 17th regs but that does not say it is dangerous so I would say thats up to the customer and your sales patter.

Hope that helps

thanks for the reply.

Hi Paul dont know of any attachment if you install a socket that circuit has to be to the 17th edition so install an RCD in its own holder outside the CCU.

does this mean that the whole circuit has to be rcd proteted? no wonder things get expensive.

is the best way to install a rcd for the circuit via a henly block? or is there a better way?

thanks

Does the additional socket have to be rcd protected under the 17th in an existing installation, I thought this applied just to special locations and sockets likly to be used for outdoor use.

Hey baldsparkies good download from elecsa, just did my 2382 last month and I overlooked that with existing installations and rcds,I regulary have to update circuits to rcd for use in the bathroom.

Yep, worth the read bathroomboy, its a minefield though at the moment, I contacted the nic myself regarding non rcd protected sockets on existing installations with referance to PIR's.They get a code 4 with a code 2 if they can be reasonably expected to supply outdoor equipment.

And yet if you added a socket to exactly the same installation you have to provide rcd protection to it regardless. It certainly keeps you on your toes and plays havock with pricing:(

Your not kidding I will probably end up having to tell the customer that on top of the quote for the nice new bathroom, the new shower pump, downlights and led mirror there will be an addiotional charge for at least a new board. But whats going to happen that guy with the hat that came on a horse will do it for a lot less.
