So...
If you're doing minor works on a lighting circuit (adding/moving lights) and you arn't personally chasing any cables into a wall but you've a sneaking suspicion there may be a few existing switchdrops at <50mm depth....would you insist on RCD protection?

Generally I try and RCD everything but it can be a real ballache at times. I was chatting to a guy who took the view if he's not chasing in any new cables its not really necessary.

Also am I right in thinking they considered adding a note regarding this in the first amendment but then abandoned it?

RCD protection would only apply (if needed) to the work YOU are carrying out. So say for example you are adding a fan into a bathroom spurred from the lighting circuit. Technically, RCD protection would only be needed for the fan and cables you are installing and not for the lighting circuit.

If all your work is above the ceiling RCD's are not needed unless its a bathroom.
