Hello all.

I'm qualified but not competent. Lacking in experience, a catch 22 as I keep being told by prospective employers over and over again. I need to rewire my kitchen before a new one is fitted and it will be good practice.

The wiring is currently a mess. Lights and sockets on the same one radial. A ring, another lighting radial and a cooker radial all going back to a bs3036 rewireable fuse Cu.

I want to replace it all with 1 lighting radial, 1 cooker radial and an extension of the downstairs ring. Please let me know if my following thinking is correct. As I'm extending an existing non rcd'd ring I don't need to rcd protect it, right? As for the oven, it will be the same cable as it's 6mm already so will I need to rcd that? I'm considering changing the cu but I'm worried about it highlighting other problems as the systems 30+ years old and has been added to by various diy enthusiasts over the years. Spur on spur on spur etc. Are there rcd's available that will fit an old rewirable board? Or can I fit an rcd'd connection behind the oven at the load end of the cable?

All advice appreciated. Thanks.

Would be good experience to re-wire the whole gaff with use of building control.

If you are extendind a non RCD ring, yes, it needs protection. and the kitchen would be better on its own circuit.

Alterations to ring should be RCD'd....but as marty says a new dedicated ring would be better.
Cooker only needs to be RCD'd if it comes under the buried cable regulations.
Same with lighting,RCD if buried cables regs apply.
There are no rcd's/rcbo's to fit a rewirable DB,if you dont want to change the existing pull out the circuits you are altering and supply from an additional db with rcbo's.
You may need to sort the bonding as well by the sound of it.

Dont forget if the cooker switch has a 13A socket outlet on it you Will need RCD protection, regardless of it being buried or surface mounted.

If it's experience your after why not re-wire you whole house.....sounds like it needs it and if you do make any mistakes, it's your own house so no customer to chew your ear off.

Ok thanks.

Havent' got time for a rewire. My mums away for a few weeks and the kitchens a surprise. Don't want her returning to candle power!

Bonding definately needs updating. I'll look at a new cu and a new circuit. None of the cables are sufficiently buried. This can't be that common, deep holes weaken the walls surely? My house is 100 plus years old, I'd much rather stick bits on then in!

I'll let you know how it goes.
