So, how has the recession effected all you guys when it comes to your trade as electricians? are there jobs out there? or is it more of a struggle now to find decent work?

(mods-wasn't too sure where to put this, please move it if I have it in the wrong place :) )

After working solid for last 2 years on big commercial jobs,in south east then laid off in April.Nothing since.I been out 6 weeks now and repeatedly phoning round. Worried about mortgage and savings going fast. Had to renew JIB card, 5 weeks now and still no sign.Spoke to a spark today and he`s been waiting 7 weeks!
Don`t look good at this time.

Its like this, the way i see it, over the last 7 months there has been a huge surge of companys needing welders , Pipefitters etc. That means one thing to me, there soon going to need alot of sparks. For example in canada, they cant seem to get enough of them, huge mod fit outs and pipe racks etc. there soon going to need alot of sparks aswell. Its a bit of a cycle.

Dont worry are turn will come. We,ll be in demaned and the black trades will be in our present postion.

The place i served my apprenticeship at paid 15 guys off last week , and there i havent seen much jobs in the paper

Crikey. I was under the impression that there aren't enough in the electrical trade, & therefore it's a sure thing. I did a search on the internet & there seems to be loads of jobs going. Is it particular area's that are lacking in work?

not to much around here

we have been havin a few days off here and there they soon add up ina month though which takes alot out of my little pay

New build domestic is very hard to come by in the south east as a subbie. Been layed off 3 times now as different firms run out of work. Money dropped as well. 3 years ago I was coining it in. I have called LOADS of firms & they all say the same thing, that new build work is pratically at a stand still! Hopefully it will pick up soon, things have been getting bad for the last 18 months.

Was mainly carrying out office fit out related work in central london... dried up overnight...

mainly carrying out domestic repairs and alterations just now.... its slow...

Started my own business this year and it is really slow! Only working about 3 days a week, but if i was still trying to sub contract i wouldnt have worked in 6 months!

Same here, started on my own this year, and it isvery slow. Averaging about two and half days a week work, but if I was still relying on agencies I would`nt be working at all. Surley it has got to start picking up soon?

This is a good reason why not start up in ANY trade at the moment.

If you are in a fairly stable job, its best to stay put for now.

Sorry to hear that some of you guys are struggling. We are based in Bedfordshire and have enough to keep the two of us going. Mainly domestic work. Our builders are having to price low to get the work and they don't have more than a few jobs lined up. Usually they are stacked out.

You are welcome to add your details to the contacts listing on my blog Electrician’s Blog » Interface- Free Jobs Listings

Hope things improve. Good luck
