We are changing to a gas cooker from electric. The cooker control unit will have to be removed as it encroaches the space above the cooker. I wonder if someone could advise me as to the best (proper) way to do this.

Is it OK to:

1. Remove the switch, put the cable ends into a junction box and leave it in the cavity with a blanking plate over it. and

2. Remove the fuse carrier in the CU and label it - or disconnect the cable in the CU and label it.

Am I allowed to open up the CU if disconnection is necessary or it it a job for an electrician?

Many thanks,
Al

best option is to disconnect from CU. idedally, call in a qualified spark, unless you are competent to do it. as sintra says, it will only cost you a call=out fee. ( ÂŁ30-ÂŁ40 )

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I would prefer to get an electrician in. Unfortunately they all seem to be very busy in this area at the moment. I've only been able to leave messages on answerphones and no replies as yet a week later. Will keep trying though.

Thanks again,
Al

makes you wonder if some sparks want to get work. i had same trying to get a plumber. either ansafone or his missus telling me he was out. if you were local to me, i would guarantee coming out within 24 hours. my phone does not have answer phone.

Thanks - I'm in Swansea. I was going to have the cooker switch moved and could well have it done if not a huge job - it could be useful in the future if we, or future house owner wanted to go back to electric cooker.
