References available?

I've seen on various trades' business cards 'references available'. Does anyone do this? I think putting it on a bus card could seal the deal in some cases, but of course you have to be able to back it up. Now I'm sure I wouldn't have any problem getting good references from customers, but I'm also sure that my customers wouldn't like to be rung up all the time with people asking if I'm any good, so how should we go about it? Could I just collect some 'testimonials' from customers and call them references? Is it worth it, do you think? Cheers all.
