In commercial electrical installation is it acceptable to run cables horizontally?
We need to relocate existing sockets and add new to this circuit.
Also if we can not achieve a depth of 50mm into wall does reg 522.6.101 apply if we use RCD's?

Leaving the subject of skilled or instructed person aside
The cable is not mechanically protected.its less than 50mm in the wall,it needs additional protection by rcd

You are using the rcd "because" it does not comply with 522.6.101

You should be aware of cable zoning ...its a fundamental basic for any Electrician to know whether just out of college or 50yrs in the trade and the BS 7671 covers Domestic, Commercial and Industrial so same applies, refer to your Regs book or OSG to remind yourself of these zones ....as your still an apprentice ill soften up on you as we all start somewhere just curious as you put occupation Project Manager and your an apprentice Electrician ....you should have a competent person overlooking your job to answer such a question.

or, if you're a builder/kitchen fitter, just run them the shortest way, diagonal/behind door architraves/thrown behind cupboards.......

Was an apprentice some years ago. The situation applies to our electrical contractors on site and I am trying to defend their work. I have the buildings maintenance guy saying the wiring is a hazard because its not 50mm from face of wall and dangerous because its run horizontal. This guy is causing us grief with client. Any comments to defend the situation would help. Thanks

If the cables run horizontal are in a safe zone,ie there is an accessory indicating the safe zone and additional protection (if needed)then he is a

Easier to get him to show you where you are not complying with BS7671!!
Cables run horizontal that do not achieve a 50mm depth and are RCD protected will comply to the Reg's. As stated above, they do meet defined safe zone philosophy!!
