Morning,

I'm putting in an extractor hood in my kitchen. The spur that's feeding it is going behind the chimney/duct cover of the hood. This means that the chimney/duct cover has to be removed in order to isolate the supply to the hood. Is this ok, or do need a way of isolating the hood from an accessible place such as another spur above the worktop?

I'd rather not have to put a spur above my worktop due to limited space.

And while i'm here, is there a minimum distance from the hob that the cooker isolator should be? I can manage about 350mm at the moment...

Thanks in advance.

With a cooker hood that has a canopy, the fused spur can usually be mounted above a nearby cupboard, for the sake of a small piece of pipe bedded into the wall from the spur to feed the flex at the hood position, there would be no problem with hidden connections and also, the isolation is then local, convenient and out of sight

Thanks, just to add: There are no cupboards on the wall that the hood's going on. This may be used for a Part P inspection at some point so want to get it spot on...

Just another consideration that is often overlooked , the cooker hood should be 650 to 750mm above the cooker depending on its type , eg gas or electric etc. - or follow manufacturers instructions.

Obviously you are notifying this kitchen work before carrying it out, as you are not yet part P registered...

Do you have any sockets on the wall "close" to the cooker hood? You could add a FCU or a double pole isolation next to a socket and run a spur up to the hood socket or simply run a spur from the socket to the hood.

Personally I'd fit the FCU or double pole isolation switch. Not sure I'm too keen on the MCB being the point of isolation for the hood socket as it would make fault finding tricky on that circuit if you had to turn it off to isolate the hood.
