Regs Vs metalwork!

Hi guys

Here's one for you, went to a job today where the customer wanted 2x twin socket outlets mounted underneath her permanent mobile home (Yes i know, oxymoron there, but best way to describe it)!! The metal framework either side of the access hatch was the only real option of mounting the two units to be within arms reach of the customer so that was where they went via 4 x 3mm screws drilled through the support frame. However, I did wonder afterwards if there were any regs regarding drilling through girders/metal frames etc for mounting or access seeing as how we have several for wooden joists etc, any ideas?

I always thought drilling into structural steelwork was a massive no, and you're supposed to use purpose made fittings or clamp around it with unistrut etc.

Yes - very probably, but it's too late now !!!

Ooopps to late. Yes there are regs regarding drilling structural steel work.
I just hope you gave a good coat of zinc paint around where you drilled.

i don't think a couple of pinholes in the steel will make the home collapse. don't worry about it. as long as it's electrically safe.

Well quite a lot of jobs I do, you are not allowed to take any metal away from a girder, so therefore you are allowed to drill and tap them, if you had had used self tappers, I would say that was tapping them just about.

Amyways dont worry about it mate sure it will be fine!
