Hello all,
I have just stumbled across this forum in my lunch break and hoped maybe someone on here could advise me.
Until recently I worked as a dish monkey for a Sky subby, getting sick of the work and sometimes ridiculous hoursI decided I needed a career change.
My father works as an electrician for a local council. I tag along to help him with the occasional job and found the work and atmosphere enjoyable and decided I'd like to get into this line of work.
I attended a course in my spare time to earn the basic qualifications with the hope to become an electricians mate as it seemed nobody was willing to take on an older apprentice (I was 24 at the time).

Luckily I came across a job for a trainee electrical inspector / clerk, which, with my experience of PLCs and heating controls from a previous job they deemed me to be the best candidate for the position.

Qualifications wise i have the following:
HND in Electrical / Electronic Engineering
City & Guilds – 17[SUP]th[/SUP] edition BS 7671
City & Guilds – Fundamental Inspection Testing and Initial Verification

And a Part P certificate which I'm sure isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

My question is:
I'm currently lacking the practical experience which all of my mentors have received through apprenticeships.
The company I work for is more than willing for me to take training but want me to arrange it, I'm unsure of what sort of training I need as there is just so much my mentors have picked up over the years through experience rather than being taught.
Ideally I'd like to find something I could use to twist my employers arm into letting me gain some valuable practical experience.

I was looking at the 2356/2357 and working as a mate for one of the main contractors my employer uses but would just like some guidance.

Thanks in advance,
Dan.

Ps: Sorry for the ridiculously long post!

To work as an electrical inspector as you say requires experience, unfortunately that is not something that can be taught on a course. You would need to be working with someone for a period of time to gain the detailed understanding required.

However the 2357 is a useful course to take whilst employed for the purposes of undertaking electrical work and will give you additional qualification required to be an electrician.

If you are inspecting installations then the 2395 would be a useful course as well as this covers periodic inspections in more detail and would improve your suitability for this type of role.
