Relocating meter copboard

Hi Folks,

Need some advice. I have an unsightly electric meter cupboard inside my house right by my front door - the first thing seen on entering ther hallway. I would like to relocate the cupboard to the out side wall of my house.

Can this be done by an electrician or do I need to approach the supplier? Any ideas as to the possible cost - I dont want to move the meter cupboard any distance, simply to turn it round 180 degrees so that it faces outwards if you see what I mean.

Any advice appreciated.

Mete rbelongs to the supplier so they would have to move it. Cost an absolute fortune.

You will need to contact your local DNO and they will come round and give you a quote.

You would also need to employ a competent electrician to relocate the CU if its in the same place.

DNO charges for this kind of work varies but you should expect to pay around £300-£500, and thats just to move the meter and cutout.

Parents were quoted £500ish about 6 months ago to move their meter by the supply authority. Apparently, there are 3 types of supply that they recognise(relating to how the supply enters the building,NOT whether its TN(C)S etc). Depending on which one you have determines how much it will cost. I think if it were one of the other types it would have been a fair bit more than they were quoted. You may also need a spark to replace the meter tails, chances are they wont be long enough or the right size. Not sure if they will need to provide a test sheet or not, sometimes we have been asked to provide test sheets, and make sure the installation is in a finished state, other times they dont seem to care either way. I'm sure others here will know the answer.
BTW, anytime we have had to deal with suppliers at work, they have been a complete nightmare, good luck speaking to the same person twice

Here's a thought, it sounds from what you're saying that the meter and cut-out are on an outside wall.
Assuming it's two skins of brickwork with a cavity between, could you perhaps flush it into the inner skin, right where it is, would that lessen the impact enough?

Mr Brady - the meter housing already sits flush with the wall, just the 'angled frame' and door being proud of the wall. At 800 x 580 there's no hiding it. The idea is to kick it outside, brick up & plaster the hole - would then allow me to install a larger radiator.

Might contact my DNO for a quote as a matter of interest - I'll certainly post the figure quoted on the Forum.
