Hi Guys.

First of all. If this is in the wrong section I'd like to apologise, the section I wanted to post in has a padlock..and It's my first post here. I have a hypothetical question to ask.

If I would like to remotly disable the electricity within my OWN house from another room... Say upstairs is this possible?
A safe easy to disable.. nothing like an EMP hah

I'm not an electrician, I'm a software enginneer..

I'll reveal the reason why after a few responses.. and don't worry It's nothing illegal.

Yes it can be done by breaking the circuits you want to isolate through a contractor and installing a switch to control the coil.

Thanks for the fast response. That sounds good. Erm.. In laymens terms.. How much effort / funds do you think would be required for this and preferably DIY?

A contractor you say Strima, sure you don't mean a contactor?

if your a software engineer, take a look at Siemens new logo programable logic relay if you want to get fancy, program it to control contactors feeding circuits. It can be connected to an Ethernet network, or if you want to be really fancy connect to a phone over a cellular network.

Starting price would be circa 150-200 with software.

Really depends on how many circuits you want to isolate as one contactor can do 4 circuits and the position of the remote switch in relation to the contractor. In all honesty it should be less than a days work for a spark so wouldn't be that expensive to get it done properly. Are you going to reveal the reason?

dxon't help him. i sussed it out. he wants to fix it so when england play ireland in the 6 nations, just as ireland are going for a try, he wants to turn the floodlights off. :49:

contactor controlled by raspberry pi/arduino board is another option.

Why...? you can buy a ready made unit, to control anything over the mobile network....we control hmo fire alarms over vodafone data network. Dont need a home made processor board...!!
