Hi all was Pat testing my mates workshop ,he mainly does petrol lawn mowers, chain saws, quads etc, and they have just started selling electric lawn mowers and chippers and we got talking about servicing and repairing the electrical ones.

Now he says that they will get complete plug,flex,on/off switch , motor assemblies in one complete unit that under a warranty situation they will gut the inside and replace the lot and send it back to the customer.

I asked to see one of the assemblies and yes they are all separate with various connectors etc , basically every part is individual and needs put together.

Will they need to be tested prior to sending them back to the customer , i think yes ,he says no, in the end i told him to contact his public liability insurer to find out there take on this

SO yes or no to testing prior to return to customer????

I think it would be advisable to test them

Most hire companies test their equipment before it is hired out and that is without repairing them

One company I know that repairs power tools tests every machine after repair and provides the test results to the customer

If they are carrying out warranty repairs does the manufacturer expect them to test any repaired equipment?

I would say yes it does any damage or injury and they will be knocking on his door it will strengthen his case of consumer negligence. Without pat test he will be on his own including his PLI.

Had a look at the pat testers bible page 31 "Manufacturer`s equipment in new or as new condition may also be subjected to production testing following refurbishment or repair" So if they are doing it what excuse has he got for not doing it.

Ask him has he considered his position if after a repair customer goes home with appliance with his invoice in his hand and gets an elctric shock.
