Hi all,

Is there an actual regulatory requirement to install consumer metering (e.g. within the main incoming panel board) of the installation either as a whole, or phase by phase, in a new industrial or commercial 3 phase installation? If so what qualifies the such an installation as requiring this?

Thanks in advance.

Other than its offence of theft if the supplier doesn't provide a meter.?

Or have I misunderstood your question?

Haha yes lets assume there's DNO metering in place! I'm talking about consumer metering downstream in the consumers distribution equipment.

Good question Murdoch but why do we NEED alot of things the regulations stipulate! I guess, for example, there may be circumstances where it is prudent to monitor the usage of each phase, or perhaps the DNO meter might not be accessible to the consumer, or use as a check meter to verify the DNO meter readings. I'm talking purely 3 phase industrial commercial, not single phase or domestic incidentally. Just interested as to whether there are any requirements, sounds like Dave is talking building regs - Part L...

Hi Dave, so it sounds like there are requirements in Part L relating to consumer metering?

Yes there is something in part L which requires metering to be installed in non-domestic distribution boards. I don't know the specifics myself but the document is free to view online as it is a part of th building regulations.
