hi new boy here, looking to retrain as a sparks, currently working as a train driver on 40k, my question is,as a qualified sparks can l get near 40k working in london?(sensible replys only)
:rolleyes:Cheers Lads

I wouldn't know specifically about working in London but around here a fully qualified sparks with a few years experience could probably hope to achieve around half that.
Bear in mind you would need to spend around 4 years training, earning more like £10k or even working for free for the experience.
All this talk of earning £52k after a 10 week crash course is bull honkey.

That said if it's something you really want to do and you are able to take a severe pay cut for a few years it can be ultimately rewarding. Not something to do just for the money though.

on that money i might re train(pun intended) to be a train driver,i made 39k last year but doing over 60hrs a week(security systems),worked most weekends too,i was looking to get back in to sparkying as heard the good money being talked about, was jib spark previously but the good people on here told me i was much better off where iam, theres not alot of work for top sparks around never mind the new ones, but good luck if you decide on a career, but have a look at the posts re -wages etc,you might change your mind..

alarm man

Thanks for that, yes driving a trains ok money but a more boring and brain damaging job you won't find, always wanted to train as a sparks and now even if l do it part time to start with, that would be fine by me.

I wanan train as a train driver 40K no crawling around kacky building sites dealing with obstonate site agents no worry about if you will be working next week or signing on No wondering if the company paying you is going to diddle you( or go belly up) Id stick to driving a train m8

I'm doing the same. Currently a train driver and running my business side by side and hopefully get to a stage where i can sack the driving. The grass is always greener as they say, but as far as i'm concerned i would much rather be scratching around under floorboards and taking grief off demanding customers monday to friday than working nights and weekends. More family time is the main reason and not being able to attend bbq's in the summer cos ur working is the other. Shift work is ****

Im a sparks, over twenty years, now doing signals, permanent nights, real killer, but with whats out there at the moment,id say keep the driving but qualify as a sparks as well, when its good, the moneys real good, plus you cant beat working days and being your owm Guvnor!!!!

I work on On Track Plant in Yorkshire. So its constant nights and weekends!!! I've been set up by myself for about 3 months and to say its slow is an understatement. Maybe my advertising needs improving or the word needs to get round, i dont know. I've given myself 2 years to build up and if i cant live off it then, then its weekends and nights all the way!!!!!

With regards to getting work in what do all you established sparkys recommend doing as a new business.
