Hi
Stumbled across this forum and had a look through a few threads and wondered if any of you kind people could offer me some advice.
Basically I served a apprenticeship from 1988-92, worked out of time for about a year before being made redundant late in 92.
I had a career change in the pharmaceutical industry, bit of fault finding etc but have not done much in terms of sparking for a few years now .
The dreaded "R" word has cropped up again and ill be out of work in this industry in 2012.
Im looking at some courses but dont know what is relevant , i have my 236 parts 1&2, AM2 and NVQ level 3 , 16th edition.
I realise i will have to do the new regs, but what else would i need? I have loooked @ The C&G 2391 but the prospectus says only sparks currently working can apply.
What advice could you give me in order to get my sparking career back on track.
Is there any courses i could do to get me up to speed?
and what exactly does Part P mean?
Thanks in advance
Steve

you are qualified enough, an update to the 17th edition is required and membership to a scheme if doing domestic on self employed basis (you can join most now and they will give you a year to get 17th)

personnaly 2391 is a must for any electrician and not as difficult as people make out.
so i would consider doing 17th then 2391 back to back cost about ÂŁ2-300 at local college, then register witha scheme.

oh part p is a requirement of the building regs in dommestic properties which says that to carry out any electrical work you must either:
inform local authority of any works and pay their fees
or
register with a scheme then you can just get on with it without involving labc

Thanks, i was hoping that would be the case.
I still dont really understand Part P. Is this a qualification or is it a scheme you pay to be part of. I have seen people quoting it as a tax for the working man.

Thanks again, just seen your edited comment about Part P.

If you did your 16th prior to 2001 then you will have to do the full 3 day 17th course at a cost of about ÂŁ400, if you did it after 2001 then you qualify for the 1 day update at about ÂŁ180 plus the cost of the books. I havent done the 2391, but intend to when time and money allow, there wont be much change out of ÂŁ700. I agree it would be an advantage but testing and inspection is not too difficult to learn yourself especially if you are only doing domestic work and some smaller commercial work. Get The IEE guidance note 3 along with the OSG and BRB books, the Electricians Guide to the building regs is a good buy as well.
Add to all this the cost of Part P scheme provider another ÂŁ400-ÂŁ500, then you are looking at a bill of about ÂŁ2000 once you have bought all the books as well.

Then there is all the bits you need for Part P self cert scheme, like Insurance, test kit etc etc, although you should have all this whether you are registered or not.

Part P is a building regulation, which you have to comply with when performing electrical works within a dwelling.

To comply, you have to be deemed competent (i.e. be a member to a competent persons scheme, NICEIC, NAPIT, ELECSA etc), or if not deemed competent, you have to have your work inspected by the Local Authority at cosst to you or the householder, which is probably in the region of ÂŁ200 or so.

Part P is not a qualification, but a statute which you need to comply with...as ezzzekiel said get registered with a scheme, whereby you can just get on with the job and self-certify your work without local-authority involvement.

Look here Planning Portal - Approved Document P for Part P of the regs.

I cannot thank guys enough , Its looking like the company i currently work for will foot some of the Bill towards re-training, so hopefully i should not have to fork out too much of my own hard earned.
The advice you guys have given me makes me feel a bit more confident that getting back into it may be a viable option.
@ Yooj , Nice one , i have downloaded that pdf and will have read through that.
Thanks again

well you got it good up there for courses. sirkit probably has the same option as me in Leeds. one place lcb and the last time i rang them the 2391 was ÂŁ650 ish. tta in osset is around the same price and the skills ctr in wakie is around ÂŁ550.

so if anyone needs the 91 get upto newcastle. do you have a number mate as I have a mate wanting to take it who is working up that way
