I'm due to start the 2391 course in the coming months. What books should I be looking to get my head into. I've just got myself copys of GN3, Brian Scaddens 17th Edition Inspection and Testing and City & Guilds Exam Success Inspection and Testing. Is there any other books which could come in handy?

I really want to pass the exam but I've heard a big percentage fail first time compared to previous examinations.

Any tips on passing would be appreciated!

Some good books there. The Amicus Guide is also good, and there are also good Megger DVDs dealing with initial verification which you may also find helpful.

In my experience. I had never done any testing what so ever. I got on the course after much consideration on doing the 2392-10. My said why pay money for that and maybe in a year or two go and do the 2391.

So I went for the 2391. I just read all the same books you have bought, plus you will get loads of material from the course. I read some more and read again. Locked myself away for like 10 weeks. As it was a 10 week evening course.

I did loads of practice exams over the last 3 weeks of the course. Was getting low ish marks on these. I eventually had the exam paper day. And passed first time.....

Then remeber I never had a clue on testing prior but now faced the practical, very long afternoon. I did all the tests in under the time required. checked and double checked on the periodic section.

And passed

What I am saying here is I heard all the same stuff as you. How hard the exam is blah blah....

As long as you revise and read your notes you can pass anything. Nothing is that hard it cant be passed. The 2391 is no exception. Just read your material become familiar and practice pass papers as much as you can.

I find it harder now as I only passed my 2391 last Feb. Got the results in April. I have done no testing ever since. Now thats hard.

Good luck and all the best.

I found 'A practical guide to Inspection, Testing and Certification of electrical installations' by Christopher Kitcher very useful. Much bettter than Scaddens

Dont panic
My employer booked me on the 2391 only 3 weeks before sitting the paper, it would have been nice to be warned earlier but at least they were paying lol. I havent done testing since passing my level 3 C&G years n years before. I buried my head in the BS7671 and also the testing routines detailed in the OSG to get back in the swing of the finer details of the regs in general. They got me the exam success book and GN3 less than a week before the exam and I read that little and often running highlighter pen through anything i saw as a good exam question.. I passed my written 1st attempt and i put it down to grabbing the books often for short refreshers which made most things just sunk in..
Some little helpers i found were the short rcd codes ie: 4 digit had short times - 200ms, long codes ie:5 digit had long times ie 300 ms. Name anything you can to help remember things such as the wording on the bonding clamp "SAFETY ELECTRCAL CONNECTION - DO NOT REMOVE", I remmembered easy when i thought of SEC - Southern Electrical Company which triggered the brain...

I have to admit i didnt write anything on the cable calc question though lmao

I still have the practical to take on March 11th but at least i can take my books to that one

Good luck

I did a 4 day course and basically was hit with a couple of tests every period and built ip the entire testing sequence. Main thing is know your isolation procedure inside out, needs to be ingrained and feeling natural. Writing the test sequence down each night as best as you can without copying (get it in your head). Keep your probe tips short at all times (if you take them off, put them back on straight away).

As for the written, spend about 60 seconds per question on the first half. If nothing comes move onto the next question. Later questions may prompt answers to earlier questions. Learn how to draw a complete supply circuit from the transformer to an appliance and label it correctly (loads of marks)

Above all relax and enjoy :)

I passed with ease

I used Gn3, scaddens insp test, and exam sucess, these were the only books i used, studied them back to front and to be honest i found the exam quite easy.

The coding part is all down to experience and knowing whether something is right or wrong. Remember some pics have no faults.
