rewire

hi guys, just after a bit of advice, ive been offered a rewire in a 3 bed house, but the woman is living there with her 2 yr old, whats the best way of attacking this, cos i do not want to turn power off all day, i havent done a lot of domestic so your help would be great

encourage her to move out for a few days - it is going to take much longer if the house is occupied and not be particularly safe for the child would be my opinion.

Agreed, best if she can move out, particularly if you can't pull in some of the new cables and have to start chasing out new runs (very messy). Also a lot safer when it comes around to test/inspect.

Best to invest in some polythene covering, if you're having to channel out (you can get it with wide masking tape along one edge), to protect the furniture.

send her to her mother's for a week or so. saves having to replace floorboards and carpets every night.

Always a pain when the client is in the house having to make sure nothing gets in her way or the childs.
As Tel has said you will spend the last hour every day clearing up so you can leave the house safe for them at night this is a waste of your time and a pain!!!

yeah understand about keeping house safe at night, just asking what was the best way to go about it, ie use the old runs or do new chases all the way through house and repair the old ones

Hi topquark where would one get this it sounds great.

For some reason most of the rewires I do are occupied, whatI tend to do is run cables to approximate positions, then install pointsadjacent to the existing locations and any new locations that are required. Ithen plaster up, fit accessories before changing the CU. But I always explainthat it’s a costly way to rewire a house and they would be better of going awayfor a few days.

To be honest when pricing a rewire job one of the first thing I look at is whether or not the premises will be occupied as well as whether or not there will be a great deal of furniture. Other factors would also include whether there is a carpet which is to stay and are the floorboards tongue and groove. These are all factors which you should look at before you can even give a realistic quote. At the end of the day you are there to provide a service and if the client is willing to "fork out" the cash you can take the necessary steps and carry out a full rewire slowly but surely and be paid for it. At times you have an entire place to yourself with no carpet, furniture or even other tradesman and at times you have to work around every one (and thing) that happens to be there, just get your pricing right and proceed. That's my take. Huseyin
