Hi, im having trouble with a task ive been set at college. Via testing at the cu how would you identify that the phase and neutral are from the same leg for instance if you cant see the incoming outer sheath. I think its something simple im missing, or im just being stupid. Cheers.

It may not be the best way but I would disconnect the first socket on the ring attach one lead to the red/brown at the socket and test both red/brown at CU you will get continuity on one and total resistance on the other repeat the same for neutral and you have identifed them

Hope that helps

Chris

Again you could do as I said take first socket off connect line and neutral together test at board for continuity on both line and neutrals only one line and neutral combination will give you continuity you will have still identified both legs of the ring.

Ahh sorry, yeah that does work. When he said at the board i took it that you didnt need to go to a socket and cross connect anything. i spoke to another student and he said hed seen a demo and the lec literally did it at the board without going to a socket, which is what confused me.
