I've been asked to relocate a number of sockets only to find that in order to isolate the circuit that this requires 2 mcbs switching. Its an old property with a number of jb's so I suspect someone has inadvertently joined the 2 rings. Any advice on locating where the 2 circuits have been joined would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

when i get jobs like this, i usually charge them per hour to split then by price after. these jobs can be a pain and very time consuming.

suggest a rewire? lol. might be better for the customer.

Im so very very pleased that it is you with that job and not me a long and tedious pain in the neck awaits you. Knowing my luck I will probably get one next week;)

I had same problem.....

Look at the spur for the boiler matey... Mine yurned out to be the gas installers had spared from an upstairs socket (room above kitchen where boiler was situated. Then a new socket had been added by kitchen fitters who tapped into what they thought was the ring between one socket and the boiler spare.... and then to another socket.

Twas a nightmare to fault find.... Good look with that.

Thanks all for your replies, fortunately I'm being paid per hour but still a nightmare:(. I'll let you know how I get on.

Cheers

Agree with wire puller ive come across that exact same problem remove one of the rings and check the continuity of each then between them , if its not crossed legs the prepair to loose alot of your hair cause youll certainly be pulling it out !!:)

Agree with Wirepuller AND Nickblake--But the bright side, after years of hair pulling and going bald, youll be able to sniff these jobs out and sub them on---Good luck...

As suggested above. Check at the D.B. first.

I had this occur one. Carried out a periodic, identifying the rings correctly connected. Then got one of my guys to change the unit and I tested it afterwards. He managed to cross them over and when I asked him he insisted he taped them when he took them out and that was that... so I sacked him.

I had a boss do it once and connect them into a live board.

Wasn't until I was working on it that it was checked.

In fairness he usually did an end-to-end resistance test, but refused to accept the necessity of the correct testing regime for ring final circuits. I doubt any of the clients received Electrical Installation Certificates.
