Ignore one leg, put it to one side and treat it as the end of a radial. Then do your tests on the other leg exactly the same as if it was a radial. Just make sure the 'spare' end has all its cores separated.

That's the trick, once you've confirmed continuity it's effectively only three wires you got there. Just make sure the other ends are away from you when testing!

Why? Could be difficult if the RFC is wired in singles and you can't identify one end from another, sure you can prove continuity OK but IR on a RFC wired in singles? test it as a ring. IMO anyway

With a ring Pete, wouldn't matter whether you tested line1 against neutral2 though for IR - if it's a complete ring (which would already have been proven) then the IR test is still valid.

Brain fort mate, senility creeping in, BUT it could be dodgy if its singles and you can't ID the leg and safely get it out of harms way with 500V DC floating about wouldn't you say? yes it would be a valid test with safety in mind??? only saying

hi pete, for clarification, what would be the preferred method in that situation? testing it as a radial is how we were taught at college, though reading GN3 it makes the point that the cpc at least must be connected to the MET, so i guess it'd make sense to at least have the line conductors also terminated (and neutrals if you can isolate/test the whole board)?

The insulation resistance test is supposed to be carried out with the circuit protective conductors connected to the means of earthing anyway. Also if you cant identify the circuit properly then how can you test it properly?
