just sank a 4ft 14mm earth rod,was able to pull it out by hand going to add a second via a coupler but dont hold out much hope,how many rods can you actually couple together to get a good reading? soil is mostly clay,any suggestions..

No limit on the number of rods screwed together.

Is it feasable to connect more in series further apart rather than just going further down???

ive tried sinking it in another area its just the same,pulled straight out,going to get another rod and try that so that will give me 8ft of rod and see what happens,failing that has anyone ever tried three? i'll be in the earths centre core with any more than that

well got in in,all 8ft of it,sod's law it started to bite at just as the second rod went in, took some hammer to get it in,not used to this hard graft lark...
