I want to add a second fluorescent fitting in my garage. The wiring I require is not an issue but the routing between the two fittings is. The reason is that the integral garage has a plastered ceiling as there is a bedroom above. Although the fittings will be only about 1.5m apart, there are several joists in between. I would prefer to run a short length of trunking between the fittings along the plastered ceiling but of course there are no cable entry/exit points on the sides of the metal fixtures. I simply want to know whether it is feasible to drill cable entry/exits holes and use rubber grommets. Any advice welcome.

There is normally a cable entry point in the ends, for just this reason.

Ah unless they are mounted parallel to each other, then just drill and grommet or use a gland.

Thanks for that, snowhead. Actually they will be at right angles so at least one will have to be drilled then. Can't see any cable entry points in the ends though.

I would use 20mm plastic conduit between lights 2x 20mm adaptors/entries

Agree with GMES, plastic conduit would look better than trunking. No problem with drilling a entry point on the side of fitting where there is a space using a entry adaptor

I was once told by my local wholesaler 'rep' that flourescent fittings wern't supposed to be drilled - it weakens them, and over time makes them more liable to crack.

That's why fittings either have hooking points, or conduit points. Not saying there's any truth in this, that's just what i was told. But, i have drilled them myself aswell lol.

Likely your wholesaler was referring to 'corrosive proof' type fittings,as drilling and using fixing points on these other than those provided by the manufacturer is likely to result in the thing disintergrating at some point in the future.
