Believe it or not, I've never been asked to run data cable before. But for an upcoming job the customer wants a cable run to a new point where he will be setting up his computer. He basically just needs the equivalent of an ethernet cable so he can set up a broadband connection. But when looking over the choices of cables I'm a bit confused at all the options. Would a "Cat 5E Cable" be what I want? And would something like an "RJ45 Cat 5E Double Module Outlet Kit" be what I'd attach it to? I'm also not sure how this all gets wired from the source point - can anyone point to a resource that might explain it?

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!

cat5e is fine. cpc farnell do it by the 100m drum. and yes, fit a rj45 socket. at the source end you would have a patch panel or fit a rj 45 plug. failing which, you could buy a standard ethernet cable and run that in.

good point. however, some makes of RJ45 socket require the use of a 110 tool, not a telecom type. you can tell because the telecom type have the metal connectors at a slight diagonal. and a good computer shop will sell ethernet leads up to 25m.

As above if your not sure how to terminate the rj45 connection on the end then buy a length of cable with plug fitted on.

Also to terminate the jack you will need an rj45 crimping tool.

easier to just stick a wall outlet on either end of the cable then buy two short patch leads to connect to the equipment and router etc...

those RJ45 crimps are not easy to make off if you have never done them before !
