someone gave me one of these, thought it would be handy for estimation long cable runs, and for measuring for downlights etcc. well it turns out i can guess more accurately. sometimes it works fine, other times it's 3 metres out. waste of time, have to keep checking with the tape so whats the point!

anybody else had this?

i have one somewhere and never used it . but it could measure a room space and multiply and all and a stud finder in 1... but as you say, no need for it..

it also needs calabrated by holding in button

Is this a laser measuring device or is it ultrasonic with a laser pointer?

I have one of these (proper laser distance measure) and it's spot on to the millimetre:
Makita LD060P Laser Distance Measure (LD-060-P)

I don't use it as much as I thought I would but for some things it's unbeatable. The laser spot is very hard to see at a distance in daylight, but OK indoors.

I have something similar and if you have a large flat surface to bounce the sound off then they can be accurate (ish) however get the pointer at an angle or have a rough surface or a doorway and it loses it.
The only calibration I found was for stud detection where you hold to surface to "zero" it and then start detecting.
Never very good for anything I found.

it's ultrasonic with a laser pointer, to be honest i never knew there were different types! might explain why it's so crap!

Probably why you got given it then! The ultrasonic ones are pretty cheap and pretty inaccurate. The laser ones are very impressive, but you pay for it.

i think my ryobi one is 15m max and as someone say the surface you bounce off is part to be aware of... i would say there is better ones for surveyors an estimaters..... but at nice price...

my brother just got a job in building control this week . could be a good present for christmas if at right price... well does get me nearly all my work....
