Discuss safe isolation in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

electros

hello

I am about to start an electrician apprenticeship and I am researching a bit in general

I came across this excellent website and I would like to ask about this algorithm for safe isolation:
[ElectriciansForums.net] safe isolation
1) how do I identify the point of isolation?
2) how do I find the appropriate L1, L2, etc?
3) do I need to do the testings in that specific order?
thanks!

Hi Mate as boydy says lots of other things to learn first and i understand you just want to get a head start on things
Safe Isolation is a important safety issue and its good your thinking of that as it will be carrying out safe isolation properly that will keep yuo and others safe
the point of isolation depends on whether a circuit needs isolating i.e by a protective device such as a circuit breaker or RCBO or multiple circuits protected via a RCD or the main switch for the installation

Keep searching various subjects in the forum and things will become more clearer as you work through your course and test books for the course or search videos on youtube for safe isolation and Inspection and testing etc but your tutor will teach you all this along the way

Yes safe isolation is carried out in the order as above

Good luck mate with your course and Merry christmas

As above, if you are really keen try the Electrical Safety Council website the do some excellent guides for all sorts of electrical things, Safe Isolation being one of them. I use these for any training where I work, Good luck and a Merry Christmas Electros

In an ideal World in a large installation;

At the incomer to the building / section, there should be a Schedule of all D.B's and their location.

At the local point of use of the circuit, eg socket, machine etc, there should be a label indicating the circuit source e.g DB 6 L1.L2.L3.

Using the schedule locate the D.B circuit and lock off.

Then use the algorithm to prove what you have isolated is actually correct and safe for you to work on.

In Domestic, labelling is less clear, but not so far to walk to keep trying different MCBs.

In the real World labelling and Schedules are not always perfect...

Resort to trial and error when appropriate to locate the source of the circuit.

Don't get into the mindset that safe isolation is a chore and something that you have to go through just because you do.....cos that's when you'll start cutting corners! The procedure is there to make sure you are safe!

King is right, there can be dual supplies fed from different area's so should always be tested before work carried out.

You are probably at least a year or two from needing to do this though

for lighting circuits....well its obvious...isn`t it..

i also have other stuff that can help me identify which final is fed from which fuse/breaker in busy dis-boards.....

fusefinder.....definately worth the investment....

got a tone n amp as well...
well in fact i`v got 2 of them...lol..

Electricity is a great friend and a cruel enemy.
It has no feelings for the ignorant or incompetent, it will take loved ones and make widows of others, it takes lives with no remorse, you can't see it, smell it or hear it.
But in all fairness to this ruthless killer, it has made a marvellous Christmas dinner, it has lightened up the tree, charged our kiddies iPhones and made a welcome service to millions if not billions of people.
It just a matter of respect. Don't underestimate it power, but use the force Luke,
Oops sorry got carried away there,
Shut it out if in doubt, keep your friends close and your engines closer.
Learn your safe isolation first before anything. And the way to test for live or dead.
This should be the first thing any apprentice should lean or be tought
I think 200,000 volts on a d/c ignition circuit would be a great little shock learner synareo as a nice belt off this would keep you on your toes. And make you think wot 400vac would taste like
Enjoy Xmas

Engineer54 and glennspark believe it or not even Electrical Trainee get taught safe isolation procedures. I've worked with some fully qualified sparks who are daft enough to ignore it! Have a merry Christmas and a safe new year

correct as my first master used to say when you start cutting corners you are cutting the lumber for your own coffin!
