I have been asked to carry out a landlord safety certificate on a flat and if I remember correctly all the cable at the board was MI. I am qualified (the old 2391) to carry out these inspections but I have done minimal work on MI, and that was years ago. I also noted the last time that the kitchen is in twin and earth so there are possible horrors waiting there. I am happy to carry out the test but know that the original board is going to be there. So there might be remedial work needed. I don't intend rushing anything but some obvious pointers would be appreciated. But no swearing!

Trying to think of something to say to respond to the op

Having had a good think, the only one that always troubles me,will a couple or five or more cups of tea be available

What kind of pointers are you looking to get,is there any part of the procedure or the testing that you want opinion about

No just specifically to the mechanical protection issues around MI, and any glaring obvious checks on the glands. The testing itself is ok, sometimes boring but fine.

Well you as the inspector need to make the call on mechanical protection, remember it isnt as tough as SWA if installed in locations where it may be damaged. Prove the pot is earthed with a continuity test.

Just an EICR then, not rocket science

As you know,if the ends have been made off satisfactory and there is no corrosion around the gland/enclosure/lock nut, they rarely deteriorate if they have been left alone

Try the lump hammer test,if it gives up the ghost after 10 whacking thumps trying to flatten it, you can say to the landlord,"there you go, I knew it was not up to the job"

Sounds like the kitchen has been rewired at a later date than the original installation, most installations have modifications, you may find it is fine, get your test kit out fella.

The MI should, if done right, be OK! Test to concur obviousley!lol. With the info you have provided, I can only think of one thing!! How is the PVC twin for the kitchen connected to the cu??? Is it direct???? or connected at some point to the MI???? If the latter....I would want to inspect it.

Dont play with the MI. Its really annoying when it snaps off at the seal. That mainly applies to 16mm in my experience. If the seals are clearly coming away from the pot in any form, be very very gentle.
