Hi - Im new to the Forum (today!) but have concern. I'm bit of a dumb blond when it comes to this stuff but here's hoping you guys might be able to put my mind at rest!

I wanted 4kw system using Sanyos. Got several quotes but decided to use reputable national company (not the cheapest) for peace of mind. They did the survey - said roof could only take 14 and the inverter would go in downstairs cupboard. Placed order for 14 Sanyo 240's and SMA Sunny Boy 3300. Installation team arrived last week and it was blindingly obvious to all concerned we could easily get 16 panels on the roof (no shade issues). Further, the cupboard was far too small the timber framed house construction meant it would have been too heavy anyway, so it had to go in the loft (didnt want to put it there due to heat issues, but mid install meant we were up against it to sort removal of husbands dexion racking in detached garage, so couldnt do that). Heated call to Head Office, 2 more panels sorted (them: 'we'll do them both purely at cost for ÂŁ1300 for the error'; Me: Im paying no more than ÂŁ1k for this cock up' (I felt pretty sure they wouldnt cost the installer ÂŁ650 each but that was a guess). Anyway, they agreed. Total system cost now ÂŁ13500.

However I was then really concerned about whether the 3300 was the best match for 16 Sanyo 240's so I asked whether I should have maybe a SMA4000tl instead? (I probably sound like I know what Im talking about but its an illusion!) Told not, the 3300 was right for the job (it was sitting on my drive at that point waiting to be installed). I did wonder if they didnt want to change it cos it would then be too much hassle sending the team away then bringing them back another day with replacement inverter). the installation was finally completed 2 days later (to a very high standard thankfully).

So my concern is whether I've really got the right inverter for my system? Will it depress the potential output of the sanyo's on 'good' days given the panels shoild be high performing panels? Its bothering me. Hope someone can put my mind at rest or give me some facts that I can argue with, Im a bit (lot) out of my depth with all this.
Thanks in advance for anyone who helps! Much appreciated. Sorry its a long post.

Where to start.....

Your system wasn't properly designed from the start. I'd have used a transformerless inverter and given you an extra 100kWh or so a year. Nothing wrong with the size of the inverter - it is suitable for both the 14 or 16 Sanyo 240s. I'm assuming they are N240SE10s? An inverter in a cupboard is a very bad idea. Inverters need space to breath and you'll cook your inverter if you leave it in a confined space.

The SB4000TL would have been a better choice, in my opinion, as it would have increased your yield. However, the 4000TL would require prior permission from the DNO so they would have been reluctant to change the design late in the day. Of course, if the system was designed well in the first place then this wouldn't have been an issue.

As a side note, do you have any shading issues?

Many thanks for the helpful reply. We have a small peak off set to one side of the roof, but shading only occurs later in the day at about 5 pm (we are 30 degrees south facing) and would touch the first panel on the bottom string only at that time (it was 'wired as 2 strings' if Im using the right terms here). PS checked and yes they are N240SE10's

Sounds like its as senior member said (bad design) at 13500 they should throw in the 2 panels! inverta is diff as we all got are favs!! i would have gone for 3800 sunnyboy (16amp) due to its compliant with G83 (no worries or time waisting)but the 4000TL will give u the MAX! ref u dont no a lot (rubbish) i rec u no more than your install company!

The Power-One PVI3,6 OUTD would have been best choice all round, increased output, no need to notify DNO, (now throttled to 16A) we've got 15 x Sanyo 250's (West facing) going in on one site this next week.
