Hi fellow sparks,

im calling on you all to stick together and stand your ground.
i am currently receiving between 3 and 5 phone calls a day offering
me work.
i know people are finding it hard to get sparks in bristol coz there is
so much work going on.
i urge you all the next time one of these parasites calls you with work
at ÂŁ13 an hour,ÂŁ14 an hour tell them to shove it and tell them you want
to be paid what your worth!
come on boys lets take advantage of the situation and try and get the industry
out of the gutter

In 1989 I was earning ÂŁ70.00 a day subbying for another electrical contractor (Southampton) - things are going backward I'm afraid.

The problem is we all know this individually but you will never get complete support in any campaign to increase rates, there will always be a significant number of people prepared to work for this (and less).

This is why unions back in the day established 'closed shop' regimes to enforce unanimity - without that kind of clout you have no chance.

It's the union of the Jib that set the rates that the agencies govern their rates by.
The unions weren't that great?

I was talking about unions long before the JIB, about 150 years before:

http://www.shmoop.com/history-labor-unions/summary.html

Have a read, particularly paragraph titled 'conflicting interests' - its talking about 1800s but could apply to today.

Like I said, things are going backward

Whilst the bottom line of a union is fundamentally a good idea, unfortunately most union top men are in industry pockets or our for themselves.
I agree. Having a large organisation looking out for you and protecting your job sounds like a fantastic idea, but as far as I can see you pay ÂŁ12 a month or whatever for absolutely nothing.
I was in a union for a brief period when I was young and naive - I was on just above minimum wage and paying more than I could afford to fund a load of fatcats on more money than I could ever dream of, supposedly to protect my job and improve working conditions. I called them a couple of times but was given the generic old "well there's not much you can do about that I'm afraid". I tore up my union card after I was bullied out of that job.

The argument seems to be that the unions do a lot 'behind the scenes' making sure everyone is paid fairly etc, but the question in the back of my mind is whether they're actually doing anything at all, or if they're just 'there' like some kind of 'Bear Patrol' (Simpsons reference).
I can't imagine the likes of Bob Crow and Len McClusky are taking home the same rate as me, but then I suppose they're 'more equal' than I am.

Their what we call `spiralists` Adam. Upwardly so....
OK, nowt wrong with ambition....but to order strikes, ballots and other disruptive nonsense as a means of empowering yourself....with no thought to the consequences of those you call to picket.....
Well, you work it out....
