my mate's just got a new girlfriend, anyway the other day she had one of those smartmeters fitted, the guy comes to change it looks at the tails and says "oh my god I'm suprised you havent been burned to death in this house, these wires are way too small".She goes into panic mode and calls my mate who rings me and asks me to go have a look.I get to the house to find it was wired in the early 80's but all seems in good order the wires in question turn out to be the tails which are also in good order but are 16mm,the house has the usual number of sockets and lights an electric cooker but no shower or immersion heater.honestly I could have strangled that meter fitter, what a ----er!.

I've met a few, most are top blokes, often semi retired sparks just winding down, but every now and again theres a right muppet.

one was there while I was there and refused to reconnect the tails, this was in a house with a pregnant lady and three floors. So I asked him, if I wasn't there, he would have just left it like that, would he, so the pregnant lady could fall down the stairs in the cold after he'd gone.

he re connected them.

Did a job other day fitting a second board alongside current full one, new meter had gone in about a year ago, not joking there was a good 1/4 inch of exposed copper at the tails where they were too long! i trimmed them back and put id tape on them, also no seal, these meter fitters need /1/ regular inspecting and training /2/ a massive kick in the gooch.
this isn't the first time I've seen meter man fowl ups I've pulled tails out easy by hand where the fitter didn't tighten it up.
